LEND VOICE

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”
― Victor Hugo
What is Lend A Voice?

Lend A Voice came to me slowly over the past year.  As a performer, I was looking for that passion/inspiration moment to catapult me back into the singing world. I had been kicking around the idea of doing classical music videos for some time, but it wasn’t until I brought in the context of social issues that the spark ignited.

In its purest form, Lend A Voice is about lending a literal voice to issues that need to be heard.  My initial concept is classical music videos that focus on pressing social and environmental issues.  By partnering with non-profit and awareness groups that specialize in these areas we can increase their subscriber base and raise funds for important initiatives.

Why classical music videos?

Why not?!  But really, it’s an artistic field that hasn’t been fully investigated yet.  Classical Music as an institution may seem old and stiff, but most people do enjoy the actual music. The rise of singers like Jackie Evancho and Andrea Bocelli are strong indicators of the mass appeal still inherent in classical music today.  [And, come on, John Williams is still making magic happen for Star Wars!]  YouTube, Twitch, Snapchat, and various other social streams are leading the way in next generation content generation, but not many creators focus on classical music.  Brining it all together seemed like the right thing to do.

What are you working on now?

My inaugural video is about ocean pollution and features “Song to the moon” from the opera Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák.  You can listen to my of it recording here.  In the opera, Rusalka is a water nymph/mermaid who falls in love with a human man and wants desperately to leave the water to be with him. (Pretty much like Disney’s The Little Mermaid… except not quite the happy ending.)  Without changing the text, story or even the context of the song I have created an entirely new concept - when Rusalka sings to the moon she’s asking for help.  She wants to leave the water not just because she’s in love, but because the pollution in the water is killing her.  If anything, it makes the original story more believable!

For this project I’m partnering with some fantastic local artists here in Sydney. Marina Debris makes art out of garbage she finds on the beach and will be making the costume and props for the video.  Thibault Upton, an up and coming videographer, will be helping me with the magic of bringing the video to life. To go along with the videos, I will be working on live multi-media performances featuring costumes and content from the original videos.

When can we see it?

We’ve finished shooting and are set to do a premier for friends and fans October 1, 2018 in San Francisco.  Public release is still TBD, but I'm looking forward to partnering with organizations and individuals with a passion for our oceans to help bring it to a wider audience. Do you love the ocean?  Help spread the word!

How can I get involved?

There are any number of ways you can help!
