
How Embracing Change Helped Me Heal From ACL Injuries

It’s the one year anniversary of tearing both of my ACLs - a situation where a previous version of myself would have spiraled out into depression, anxiety and self blame, but if anything, the opposite happened… I embraced the change.
Having my body break so epically could have easily extinguished all confidence in myself and my body. I could have easily fallen for the idea that all of the things happening inside my body were life-ending. Will I ever dance again? How will I trust my knees? Am I going to be in pain forever?
How will I ever trust my body again?
Even though it's frustrating, even though all of the things I have gone through the past year sucks on some tremendous level, I knew from the beginning that every point of this journey would be an opportunity for growth and change.
An opportunity to get to know my body better, to learn more about healing and resilience, and, above all, an opportunity to change anything I wanted to about myself and my body.
Which isn't to say I wanted to change everything about myself, but simply being open to being changed by this experience. What will I learn? What will grow out of this? How will I leverage this life-changing moment?
Instead of feeling bad about what I was losing, I was looking for what I was gaining. New insights, more understanding of anatomy, better resources for pain management, new exercises for stability and strength, and more experience and wisdom to draw from.
Most people see injuries as setbacks to their careers or their lifestyles, but because I know what’s happening in the brain, I knew that this would be a time for some pretty amazing potential.
When you’re injured and healing your brain is learning how to cope with all this new information — it uses heightened neuroplasticity and myelination to build new neural pathways and, in doing so, it creates an opportunity to build anything you want.
I took the opportunity.
I embraced the change. I listened, I embodied, I moved slowly with intention, and I continue to be amazed and delighted by what my body can do for me.
This work I’ve done for myself is the work I do with my clients. A fluid mix of Alexander Technique, anatomy education, mindset shift, functional movement, somatics, and desire building that when mixed together help you ease pain, find fluid movement, build strength and establish trust in what you and your body can do.
Using the pieces already inside of you to build in a new narrative and a new reality for you and your body.
